Project Updates
What is being constructed?
There are three main phases to be completed:
-
Improved trailhead at Weaver Park in Urbana
-
Completion of the trail between St. Joseph and Ogden
-
Completion of the trail between Ogden and Oakwood
What is the latest?
The project is on pause for the winter but 2026 will be a big year for the KRT, with more construction planned than any other year in its history. About 75% of the remaining trail is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

-
Trail construction will begin spring 2026. Because the lowest bid for trail construction exceeds the available DCEO funding, staff are developing a plan for which sections to defer and fund through a future grant.
-
The trailhead at Weaver Park is underway but paused for winter and construction is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
-
A pedestrian crosswalk that will connect the City of Urbana's Baker's Lane path to the Kickapoo Rail Trail across Main St in Urbana is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
-
Tree removal is expected to be completed by April 2026 for the section in Urbana
How is this project funded?
In 2019, Illinois passed the Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, the state’s first comprehensive capital plan since 2009. The plan invests $33.2 billion over 6 years in the state’s transportation system, including $11.2 million for the completion of the remaining planned sections of the KRT. The money has been granted to the Champaign Forest Preserves, Urbana Park District, and Vermilion County Conservation District from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
